"Salvini's joke was that of a party leader, not a deputy prime minister," Fabio Rampelli , vice president of the Chamber of Deputies representing the Brothers of Italy party, told Il Foglio, commenting on the recent diplomatic incident between Italy and France. The fact is well known: on August 21, League leader and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini said that President Emmanuel Macron could "hang on to the wagon" regarding the proposal to send European troops to Ukraine.
The League leader's words prompted France to summon the Italian ambassador to Paris over the weekend, but Salvini hasn't backed down. The other deputy prime minister, Antonio Tajani, poured cold water on the situation yesterday at the Rimini meeting : " Foreign policy is made by the prime minister and the foreign minister, and if arguments need to be asserted, they win with the strength of ideas, not with the violence of words ," he said.
Fabio Rampelli agrees: "Foreign policy is primarily the responsibility of the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, who act on the most important issues with the support of the head of state. These are vastly different stories... " he explains. And he tries to reassure: "It seems clear to me that this is an incidental political controversy that cannot affect the friendly relations between Italy and France."
According to Rampelli, Salvini's comment was "predictable" given the hypothesis advanced by the French prime minister: "Whatever you think, it's a strong position that automatically draws reactions. And besides, Macron in Europe is a supporter of Ursula von der Leyen, while Salvini, on the other hand, is her opponent," he says. But, in his opinion, it remains true: " His comment was that of a party leader, not a deputy minister ."
